Vitalik Buterin blasts Ethereum 'copypasta' L2 chains, says the rollup excuse is fading

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticized the layer-2 ecosystem for creating too many similar, or 'copypasta,' EVM chains that rely on optimistic bridges. He argued that building 'yet another EVM chain with an optimistic bridge and a one-week delay' is akin to the stale practice of forking Compound governance, prioritizing comfort over genuine innovation. Buterin contends that as Ethereum itself scales and increases blockspace, the primary justification for rollups existing merely to be 'Ethereum but cheaper' is diminishing. He cautioned that having a bridge doesn't automatically integrate a chain into Ethereum's core architecture, stressing that 'vibes need to match substance.' However, Buterin did not dismiss L2s entirely, suggesting two viable paths forward: tightly integrated, app-specific systems where Ethereum handles settlement/verification, or institutional chains that publish cryptographic proofs to Ethereum.
