Mitsui to offer retail access to digital securities tied to aircraft and ships
Summary
Japanese trading giant Mitsui & Co. plans to issue the country's first digital securities linked to physical assets like aircraft and ships through its Alterna investment platform, managed by Mitsui & Co. Digital Asset Management. This initiative will enable retail investors to acquire fractional ownership in these capital-intensive assets with minimum investments around 100,000 yen ($630).
Mitsui aims to significantly expand its digital securities sales, targeting 100 billion yen by fiscal 2030, and plans future offerings including corporate bonds and more real estate products. The company also intends to use AI to drastically reduce product development time. This move aligns with a growing trend in Japan, where the digital securities market more than doubled in 2025, with major brokerages and exchanges already participating.
