Europol, Swiss Police Dismantle ‘Cryptomixer’ in Major Bitcoin Laundering Crackdown

Bitcoin Magazine
Europol and Swiss police shut down Cryptomixer.io, a major illicit Bitcoin mixing service, seizing millions in crypto and data.

Summary

Law enforcement agencies in Switzerland and Germany, supported by Europol, successfully dismantled Cryptomixer.io, one of Europe's largest illicit Bitcoin-mixing operations, between November 24 and 28. Authorities seized three servers, the cryptomixer.io domain, over EUR 25 million in Bitcoin, and 12 terabytes of data. Cryptomixer, launched in 2016, was a popular service for cybercriminals, including ransomware groups and dark-web marketplaces, used to obscure the trail of illicitly obtained funds, having moved over EUR 1.3 billion worth of Bitcoin for its clients. The seized data is expected to yield new leads into wider criminal networks. This action follows increased scrutiny on crypto mixers globally, similar to the previous takedown of ChipMixer.
