Ethereum Foundation researchers, coinciding with the Devconnect conference, published new details on the upcoming Ethereum Interop Layer (EIL), which aims to solve the fragmentation issues in the Layer 2 ecosystem. The vision, as described by researcher Yoav Weiss, is to make all L2s feel like a single, unified Ethereum, eliminating the need for users to worry about bridges, chain names, or fragmented assets. The EIL is an onchain protocol that takes a "wallet-centric" view to unify the EVM environment, making wallets and dapps multichain-native by default and automatically compatible with new rollups. This functionality is powered by ERC-4337 account abstraction, allowing users to transfer assets seamlessly across the entire Ethereum environment without needing to know the underlying chain.
