Mastercard Picks Polygon to Bring Verified Usernames to Self-Custody Wallets

Mastercard has selected Polygon to power a new system called Mastercard Crypto Credential, designed to allow users to send cryptocurrency using verified, human-readable usernames instead of long, complex wallet addresses. Mercuryo, a crypto payment API firm, will handle the identity verification and issuance of these aliases, which users can then link to their self-custody wallets. This initiative aims to lower the barrier to entry for new crypto users by streamlining the transfer process, similar to using usernames in traditional payment apps. Users can also receive a token on Polygon confirming their wallet supports these verified transfers. Mastercard stated that Polygon was chosen because its network can handle high throughput with low fees, supporting real-world payments at scale. Raj Dhamodharan of Mastercard emphasized that this system builds trust in digital token transfers by adding meaningful verification.
