Europol Busts Latvian Crypto Phishing Ring, Seizing Millions

Europol, in collaboration with Latvian law enforcement, successfully dismantled a large-scale crypto phishing ring that operated from Latvia. The criminal operation utilized five servers and a massive infrastructure, including 1,200 SIM box devices and 40,000 active SIM cards, managing 49 million fake accounts for worldwide phishing attacks. This ring was linked to at least 1,700 cyber fraud cases in Austria and 1,500 in Latvia, resulting in documented losses of at least $5.7 million. Police seized $330,000 in various cryptocurrencies, along with luxury cars and hardware. The tactics employed were diverse, ranging from impersonating loved ones or law enforcement to fraudulent business deals and blackmail using child sexual abuse material. Since many victims were Russian speakers and Russia is not a Europol member, the total amount stolen is likely much higher. This action is part of a broader, ongoing effort by international agencies to combat the significant rise in crypto phishing scams.
