FIFA Faces Criminal Charges Over World Cup NFTs

Gespa, the Swiss Gambling Supervisory Authority, has filed a criminal complaint against FIFA, alleging that competitions associated with its NFT collection may violate gambling regulations by constituting lotteries or sports betting. Gespa claims that users participate in these challenges or drops in exchange for monetary stakes with the chance to win assets of monetary value. The regulator stated it only recently discovered the FIFA NFT platform, which recently switched its blockchain partner from Algorand to Avalanche, potentially introducing new lottery-like distribution mechanics. However, the complaint is non-binding; Gespa will not spearhead a case but offered to cooperate with any prosecution efforts. FIFA may potentially resolve the issue through a non-litigious agreement or by reforming its NFT distribution scheme.
