Solana core developer Anza has officially launched 'Alpenglow', the network's most significant consensus overhaul to date, on a community test cluster. This upgrade seeks to replace portions of Solana's existing architecture—which utilizes Proof-of-Stake, TowerBFT, and Proof-of-History—with a more efficient framework designed to reduce transaction finality times to near real-time. By transitioning validator nodes through a process dubbed 'Alpenswitch', the network aims to enhance responsiveness and mitigate the instability occasionally seen during peak demand. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko indicated that if testing remains successful, the mainnet rollout could occur as early as the next quarter.
