North Korea Claims 76% of 2026 Crypto Hack Losses in Just Four Months

According to TRM Labs, North Korean hackers were responsible for 76% of all cryptocurrency hack losses in the first four months of 2026. This significant percentage is attributed to two major attacks: the Drift Protocol breach and the KelpDAO bridge exploit, which together resulted in approximately $577 million in stolen assets. While these two incidents represent only 3% of the total number of hacks, their high value skewed the overall losses. The Drift exploit alone cost $285 million, and investigations linked it to a six-month intelligence operation by North Korean actors. The KelpDAO hack drained $292 million worth of rsETH. TRM Labs notes that North Korea's attack frequency has not increased, but their sophistication has, with speculation that they may be integrating AI tools into their operations, leading to more precise and complex attacks.
