Polkadot linked Hyperbridge exploit losses jump to $2.5 million
Summary
Hyperbridge reported that its April 13 Token Gateway exploit resulted in losses of approximately $2.5 million, significantly higher than the initial $237,000 estimate. The vulnerability, located in the Merkle Mountain Range proof verification logic, allowed an attacker to forge cross-chain messages and mint unauthorized tokens on Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum. The project clarified that native Polkadot DOT remained unaffected. Hyperbridge is currently working with Binance to freeze stolen funds and intends to use BRIDGE tokens to cover remaining losses if recovery efforts are unsuccessful. Bridging services remain paused pending a security audit and patch.
