Fake Ledger App on Apple Store Linked to $9.5M Theft
Summary
Onchain investigator ZachXBT has revealed that a fraudulent Ledger Live application distributed via the Apple App Store was responsible for stealing approximately $9.5 million in cryptocurrency. The theft, occurring between April 7 and April 13, affected over 50 victims across various networks including Bitcoin, Solana, Tron, XRP Ledger, and EVM-compatible chains.
ZachXBT identified several massive individual losses, including one victim losing $3.23 million in USDT and another losing $1.95 million in various assets. The stolen funds were reportedly laundered through over 150 KuCoin deposit addresses linked to a centralized mixing service known as AudiA6. While Apple removed the app on April 13, the incident has raised questions regarding potential class-action lawsuits against the platform.
Ledger's CTO, Charles Guillemet, warned users that official distribution platforms like app stores are not inherently safe and emphasized that Ledger will never ask for a 24-word recovery phrase. Neither Apple nor KuCoin have officially commented on the findings at the time of publication.
