Square Begins Automatic Bitcoin Payment Rollout to Millions of U.S. Merchants
Summary
Square, owned by Block, has started automatically enabling Bitcoin payments for eligible U.S. sellers, significantly expanding its integration of Bitcoin into commerce. This change moves the feature from an opt-in tool, first introduced in late 2025, to a default setting for millions of merchants, as announced by product lead Miles Suter. Merchants will continue to settle in USD by default, with Bitcoin payments seamlessly converted in the background, abstracting volatility. The system utilizes Lightning Network infrastructure for near-instant transactions, positioning Bitcoin as a payment rail. Merchants can still opt out or adjust their preferences.
