Gnosis and Zisk announce ‘Ethereum Economic Zone’ rollup framework with Ethereum Foundation co-funding
Summary
Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina announced the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) at EthCC, a framework designed to enable synchronous composability between rollups and Ethereum mainnet. The EEZ aims to address the growing fragmentation of the Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem by allowing smart contracts on different rollups to interact seamlessly, using ETH as the default gas token and eliminating the need for bridging. Ernst argues that Ethereum’s problem isn’t scaling, but fragmentation, with each new L2 creating a “walled garden.” The project is supported by the Ethereum Foundation, despite its recent budget cuts, and has attracted founding members like Aave, Titan, Centrifuge, and xStocks. Zisk’s real-time ZK proving technology is a key differentiator, enabling synchronous composability. The EEZ will operate as a Swiss non-profit with open-source software and aims for minimal governance and eventual non-upgradability.
