Inside Aave’s governance battle as DeFi giant prepares for upgrade

Aave, a major DeFi lending protocol, is undergoing a significant governance debate concerning its future structure: whether to remain a neutral, open platform or move toward a more coordinated model influenced by key contributors. This tension surfaced over revenue capture from front-end interfaces, escalating with Aave Labs' "Aave Will Win" proposal, which aimed to direct all product revenue to the DAO. This move prompted the departure of active governance group Aave Chain Initiative (ACI) and key contributor BGD Labs, highlighting concerns about blurring lines between DAO control and major developer influence. Amidst this governance overhaul, Aave is simultaneously preparing for its major technical upgrade, v4, which introduces a modular architecture to improve efficiency and expand use cases. CEO Stani Kulechov views the churn as normal evolution, asserting that DeFi is stronger than ever and its next phase will be driven by real-world financial activity integration.
