Brazil Passes Law Turning Seized Crypto into Public-Security War Chest

Bitcoin Magazine
Brazil's new law allows seized cryptocurrency to be used for public security initiatives, strengthening the fight against organized crime.

Summary

Brazil has enacted Law No. 15.358, granting authorities the power to seize and utilize cryptocurrency obtained from criminal organizations to fund public security measures. This legislation enables the freezing, blocking, and seizure of both traditional and digital assets, with provisional use permitted for police operations, intelligence gathering, and officer training, even before final convictions. The law targets violent criminal groups and increases penalties for related offenses, including obstruction of police and use of encrypted communication. It also facilitates international cooperation for asset recovery and establishes a national criminal database. Interestingly, Brazil has also considered creating a national Bitcoin reserve (RESBit) and is exploring Bitcoin mining as a solution for energy curtailment at solar plants.
