Banks Are At Least 5 Years Behind on DeFi, Deutsche Börse’s Crypto Finance CEO Says

Stijn Vander Straeten, CEO of Deutsche Börse subsidiary Crypto Finance, stated that traditional banks are significantly behind crypto-native platforms in adopting Decentralized Finance (DeFi), estimating a lag of five to ten years. This delay stems from the structural requirement for large financial institutions to await clear regulatory frameworks before entering new spaces, unlike agile crypto platforms. Vander Straeten noted that younger investors are pushing for instant settlement, challenging the traditional two-day settlement cycle for stock trades. While challenger platforms lead innovation, banks maintain trust through strict adherence to rules, which professional investors demand. Despite regulatory shifts, such as the SEC and CFTC classifying 16 crypto assets as digital commodities, banks will remain cautious until regulatory clarity is firmly established.
