Tempo debuts mainnet and machine payments layer for autonomous agents

Crypto Briefing
Tempo launched its mainnet and the Machine Payments Protocol to facilitate instant, scalable payments for autonomous agents.

Summary

Tempo, developed by Stripe and Paradigm, has launched its mainnet infrastructure designed for real-world payments at internet scale, offering instant settlement, low fees, and high throughput necessary for payment-heavy workloads.

Simultaneously, Tempo introduced the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard co-authored with Stripe, enabling machines and services to automatically request, authorize, and settle payments programmatically, regardless of the underlying payment rail (stablecoins, cards, etc.). This system is tailored for agent-driven commerce, utilizing session-based payments that allow funds to be streamed in real-time, supporting high-frequency, low-value transfers.

Tempo also released a payments directory with over 100 integrated services, allowing developers to monetize APIs and enabling agents to transact seamlessly across providers like Alchemy and Dune Analytics. The infrastructure aims to support various use cases, including global payouts and embedded finance, building on testnet collaborations with major partners like Visa, Mastercard, and OpenAI.
