HIVE launches first AI GPU cluster in Paraguay as miner expands beyond bitcoin

HIVE Digital Technologies has launched its first artificial intelligence GPU cluster in Paraguay, marking a strategic expansion beyond its traditional bitcoin mining operations. Located in Asunción, the cluster is part of HIVE’s BUZZ AI Cloud platform and is currently being used by Columbia University researchers for large language model training. This deployment serves as a proof-of-concept for long-distance AI computing, evaluating latency, throughput, and workload management. HIVE plans to leverage its existing 300 megawatts of hydroelectric power in Paraguay, with an additional 100 MW under development, to scale AI infrastructure through 2027. This move reflects a broader trend among bitcoin miners to diversify revenue streams by utilizing their power and data center infrastructure for the growing AI market, contrasting with some peers who are exiting Latin American markets.
