Argentina Becomes the Latest Country to Ban Polymarket

Argentina has blocked Polymarket nationwide, citing consumer protection risks related to crypto payments, lack of age verification, and potential participation by minors. The decision followed Polymarket’s accurate prediction of Argentina’s February inflation rate, which raised suspicions of insider information. A Buenos Aires court ordered the National Communications Entity (ENACOM) to coordinate with ISPs and directed Google and Apple to remove Polymarket’s apps from their app stores. The action stems from complaints by the Buenos Aires City Lottery and the Argentine Chamber of Casinos and Bingos, who argued the platform operated as an illegal online betting system. This ban follows similar actions in Colombia and the Netherlands, while prediction markets also face increased scrutiny in the United States.
