Vitalik Buterin Questions AI Strategy of Group He Funded

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute (FLI), an organization he supported with a SHIB token donation in 2021. Initially, Buterin was motivated by FLI’s broad roadmap for mitigating existential risks, including AI, biology, and nuclear threats. However, he now disagrees with the institute’s focus on cultural and political advocacy concerning AI, believing such large-scale political action can lead to unintended, authoritarian outcomes. Buterin also expressed skepticism about FLI’s proposed safeguards for AI models, deeming them fragile and easily circumvented. He noted that the SHIB donation unexpectedly yielded approximately $500 million for FLI, far exceeding his initial expectations of $10-25 million. Buterin voiced his concerns in response to FLI’s current approach, which emphasizes policies to ensure AI benefits humanity rather than solely boosting corporate profits.
