Armed attackers force French couple to transfer $1 million in bitcoin during home invasion

A French couple in their late fifties was targeted in a home invasion on Monday morning in Le Chesnay, a suburb of Paris. Three individuals, posing as police officers, threatened the couple and forced them to transfer approximately $1 million worth of bitcoin to an attacker-controlled account. The attackers then tied up the man and fled in a white van. Authorities have launched an investigation into kidnapping, armed robbery, and criminal conspiracy, but no arrests have been made. This incident is part of a growing trend of 'wrench attacks' – physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders – which have been increasing in France and globally, with around 70 recorded assaults in 2025. Experts emphasize that even strong technical security measures cannot protect against these types of human attacks.
