Blockstream’s Jade Hardware Wallet Adds Lightning Network Support, Enabling Instant Bitcoin Payments From Cold Storage
Summary
Blockstream has updated its Jade hardware wallet with version 5.2.0 of the Blockstream Green app, making it the first hardware wallet capable of interacting with the Bitcoin Lightning Network while keeping funds secured in cold storage. This functionality is achieved by connecting Lightning payments to the Liquid Network via atomic swaps, which convert incoming Lightning payments into Liquid bitcoin (LBTC) settled in the Jade-secured wallet. This addresses the long-standing security risk associated with using hot wallets or custodial services for instant Lightning transactions. Receiving payments requires no online connection for the Jade device, as the swap occurs automatically. Sending payments involves swapping LBTC back to Lightning liquidity, with the Jade device signing the transaction offline to maintain cold storage security. This integration effectively bridges the Lightning, Liquid, and base Bitcoin layers, offering users faster payments, stronger self-custody, and a new method for moving bitcoin off exchanges.
