AI Agents Show Strong Preference for Bitcoin Over Fiat, BPI Study Finds
Summary
A new study by the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) involving 9,072 experiments across 36 models from leading providers like Anthropic and OpenAI revealed that frontier AI agents overwhelmingly prefer digitally-native monetary instruments, particularly Bitcoin, over traditional fiat currency.
Across all scenarios, 48.3% of responses favored Bitcoin, compared to 33.2% for stablecoins and only 8.9% for fiat. Bitcoin was especially dominant as a long-term store of value, chosen 79.1% of the time due to its fixed supply and self-custody features. Conversely, stablecoins were favored for transactional purposes (53.2% of the time), reflecting a functional split where AI agents treat BTC as hard money for savings and stablecoins for exchange.
Model sophistication significantly influenced preferences, with Anthropic's latest models showing Bitcoin preference rates exceeding 90%. Overall, 91% of responses favored digitally-native money over fiat, and no model selected fiat as its top overall preference, indicating a strong emergent monetary reasoning in advanced AI.
