CFTC chief Selig to clear path for U.S. perpetual futures in coming weeks
Summary
Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Mike Selig stated that his agency expects to announce guidance within the next month to clear the path for regulated perpetual futures contracts in the U.S., noting that a lack of regulation previously drove this business offshore. Speaking alongside SEC Chairman Paul Atkins at a Milken Institute event, Selig emphasized a unified approach, dubbed Project Crypto, to digital assets. Beyond perpetual futures, the CFTC plans to soon define its approach to decentralized finance (DeFi) developers and issue guidance for prediction markets, setting clear standards. Selig, currently the sole commissioner, also mentioned working toward more permanent rulemaking for these areas. SEC Chairman Atkins stressed the need for statutory certainty from Congress, as a recent Supreme Court decision has weakened the authority of agency guidance against legal challenges, making policy positions vulnerable to reversal by future officials.
