Ethereum news: Vitalik Buterin reveals his bold new plan to fix the network’s scaling problem

Vitalik Buterin has outlined a new vision for scaling Ethereum, shifting focus back to the base layer after years of prioritizing layer-2 rollups. The plan involves short-term improvements like faster block processing and more efficient use of processing windows (ePBS, implemented in the Glamsterdam upgrade) to increase transaction throughput. A key component is a revised fee structure (“gas”) that differentiates between temporary computation and permanent data storage, aiming to control blockchain growth and maintain accessibility for smaller operators. Long-term, Buterin envisions Ethereum utilizing zero-knowledge proofs and “blobs” – expanded data capacity originally for layer-2s – to allow validators to confirm activity without re-running every transaction, ultimately preventing the network from becoming overly data-intensive and exclusive to large players.
