South Korea Tax Office Leaks Seed Phrase in Press Release

South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) inadvertently exposed a crypto wallet seed phrase in an official press release concerning an enforcement campaign against tax delinquents. The release included an unmasked image of a Ledger cold wallet showing the full mnemonic phrase. Blockchain researchers confirmed that an associated Ether address received 4 million PRTG tokens, valued at approximately $4.8 million, which were subsequently transferred out. An associate professor noted that while the tokens were stolen, the actual damage might be negligible as the tokens are hard to cash out, hoping the incident pushes Korean public bodies to establish better virtual asset custody systems. This event follows another crypto custody scandal where police lost seized Bitcoin, highlighting ongoing issues with asset management by Korean authorities.
