Ethereum news: Vitalik Buterin unveils roadmap to counter quantum computing threat

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a roadmap to secure the blockchain against potential future quantum computing threats that could break current cryptographic systems. The plan addresses four key vulnerability areas: validator signatures (proposing a switch from BLS to quantum-safe hash-based signatures), data availability systems (replacing KZG commitments), everyday wallet signatures (via EIP-8141 to allow signature flexibility), and zero-knowledge proofs used by Layer-2s. For ZK proofs and signatures, Buterin suggested using "validation frames" within EIP-8141 to bundle many proofs into a single, compressed proof for verification, which would manage the high cost of quantum-safe alternatives. This follows the Ethereum Foundation establishing a dedicated post-quantum research team.
