Ethereum Foundation drops most ambitious roadmap in years, targets finality in seconds by 2029

The Ethereum Foundation released a highly ambitious, long-term plan called the "strawmap," outlining seven hard forks through 2029. This roadmap focuses on five key goals: achieving transaction finality in seconds (down from 16 minutes today) via a new consensus mechanism called Minimmit, reaching Layer 1 throughput of 10,000 transactions per second ("gigagas"), enabling Layer 2s to hit 10 million TPS ("teragas"), implementing post-quantum cryptography, and introducing built-in privacy through shielded ETH transfers. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin endorsed the document, noting that the reduction in slot time would be incremental. The overall architectural change is described as a "ship of Theseus" rebuild, replacing components one by one.
