Gate Secures Malta PSD2 License for EU Payment Services

Crypto exchange Gate has secured a Payment Institution license in Malta under the EU’s PSD2 framework through its entity, Gate Technology, authorized by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). This license allows Gate to offer regulated payment services across the European Union, complementing its existing permissions obtained under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). The PSD2 approval enables Gate to passport regulated payment services, expanding its operations beyond crypto exchange and custody into fiat and stablecoin payment infrastructure, which is increasingly necessary for crypto companies offering stablecoin payments under EU law. Under PSD2 rules, Gate can now execute payment transactions, facilitate credit transfers, and maintain payment accounts across the bloc. Gate CEO Giovanni Cunti stated the license positions the company to deliver compliant payment solutions, although the company has not specified when the expanded EU services will launch.
