Vitalik Buterin Says Ethereum Will Soon Achieve Quantum Resistance

Vitalik Buterin announced via X on February 26, 2026, that Ethereum (ETH) is scheduled to achieve quantum resistance soon, addressing concerns that quantum computers could break current encryption.

This security measure will be implemented using post-quantum hash-based signatures, which are integrated into the Ethereum Foundation's new four-year Layer 1 (L1) upgrade plan called the Strawmap. The Strawmap, which blends "strawman" and "roadmap," outlines approximately seven forks every six months, suggesting quantum-resistant slots could be delivered within the first two upgrades.

While the Strawmap provides a structured, faster upgrade cadence, Buterin noted that it is an experimental draft, meaning timelines for quantum resistance and other proposed changes, like reducing block time to two seconds, are subject to revision as development proceeds. This focus on quantum resistance is a growing priority across major blockchain ecosystems, including Bitcoin and Solana.
