Stripe says Blockchains may need to Process 1B TPS to Support AI Agents

Stripe CEO and co-founder Patrick Collison and co-founder John Collison stated in their annual letter that the widespread adoption of AI agents, which they expect will soon conduct the majority of internet transactions, will necessitate massive scaling of blockchain infrastructure. They argue that current blockchain capabilities are insufficient, citing a recent memecoin frenzy that caused significant delays and price spikes, and project a future need for blockchains supporting over one million, or even one billion, transactions per second (TPS). Currently, the fastest chains like Internet Computer Protocol and Solana process around 1,100 TPS, far short of the projected requirement. The executives also noted that AI commerce is moving past the "hype phase" into building and experimentation across five capability levels, emphasizing that universal interoperability is crucial for agents to advance through these levels, moving beyond isolated "walled gardens."
