Numo Launches Bitcoin Tap-to-Pay App for Merchants, Powered by Cashu
Summary
Numo has launched a new, free, open-source Android point-of-sale application that allows merchants to accept Bitcoin payments contactlessly, similar to Apple Pay, utilizing the NFC functionality already present in most Android devices.
The app is built on the Cashu ecash protocol, where customer wallets read an NFC tag emulated by the merchant's phone to write back a payment token. Beyond Cashu payments, Numo also supports Lightning invoices, making it compatible with any Lightning-enabled wallet. For merchants, payments settle in Cashu ecash, with an option for automatic withdrawal to a Lightning address once a threshold is met, streamlining treasury management while maintaining self-custody principles.
Numo charges zero platform fees, is open-source under the MIT license, and includes features like inventory management and payment history tracking. The team stated their goal is to make Bitcoin payments as easy as tapping a phone, offering a low-cost, self-sovereign alternative to existing payment rails.
