Vitalik Buterin is building a ‘cypherpunk principled non-ugly Ethereum’ as devs officially add FOCIL to upgrade roadmap

Vitalik Buterin envisions a future Ethereum that is both “cypherpunk principled” and aesthetically appealing, moving away from fragmentation towards a more integrated system. This vision is supported by the official addition of Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL) to the Hegota hard fork upgrade roadmap, scheduled for late 2026. FOCIL aims to ensure censorship resistance by forcing validators to include all transactions. Buterin also advocates for a “harder” Ethereum, pairing FOCIL with EIP-8141 for enhanced privacy and smart wallet support. These efforts align with the Ethereum Foundation’s goals of scaling, hardening, and simplifying the base layer, alongside initiatives like the Beam Chain and a potential transition to RISC-V. This refocus on the base layer comes amid increasing competition from other blockchains and a more assertive leadership role for Buterin.
