BTC logs worst ever start to a year through first 50 days

Bitcoin is on track for its worst start to a financial year ever recorded through the first 50 days of 2026, having declined 23% year-to-date, with a 10% drop in January followed by a 15% fall in February. This marks the first time Bitcoin has recorded back-to-back monthly declines in January and February. Furthermore, if these losses persist, it will be Bitcoin's weakest consecutive monthly performance since 2022. Data from Checkonchain indicates that the current index reading of 0.77 is significantly below the typical 0.84 seen 50 days into an average down year, highlighting the severity of the drawdown. This poor performance follows a 17% decline in 2025, making the recent underperformance more notable given that post-election years historically tend to outperform.
