Coinbase-incubated Base network to ditch Optimism for ‘unified solution’
Summary
Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase, is transitioning away from its reliance on Optimism’s Superchain ecosystem. According to a blog post, Base will be “evolving its foundational software by moving to a unified, Base-operated stack,” consolidating dependencies previously provided by Optimism, Flashbots, and Paradigm into a single repository. This shift involves adding an independent signer to the Base Security Council, replacing Optimism. While remaining a “Stage 1” rollup as defined by Vitalik Buterin, Base will require node operators to migrate to a new client to maintain compatibility with future hard forks, including an upcoming V1 fork adding Fusaka support and transitioning to Base-specific proofs. Further hard forks are planned to further reduce Base’s reliance on Optimism, aligning with the Glamsterdam Ethereum update.
