The Protocol: Vitalik Buterin’s stark warning on layer-2 roadmap

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has declared that the original rollup-centric layer-2 scaling roadmap for Ethereum is obsolete. He argues this is because Ethereum is now scaling effectively on layer 1, with low transaction costs and expected increases in gas limits. Furthermore, Buterin noted that many layer-2 networks have been slow to achieve expected levels of decentralization or may intentionally avoid higher stages for regulatory reasons. Consequently, layer-2s are no longer strictly necessary as official extensions of Ethereum, as the core network is achieving scaling goals.
