Tether Launches Open-Source Bitcoin Mining Operating System
Summary
Tether has released MiningOS (MOS), an open-source operating system for Bitcoin mining, available under the Apache 2.0 license. Unveiled at the 2026 Plan ₿ Forum, MOS is designed to manage, monitor, and automate mining operations by treating all site components as controllable workers within a single layer, offering unified visibility over hashrate, energy use, and device health.
The system utilizes a self-hosted, peer-to-peer architecture based on Holepunch protocols, eliminating the need for centralized services and scaling from small setups to industrial deployments. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated the goal is to make mining infrastructure more open and accessible. Alongside MOS, Tether also announced the Mining SDK, a framework for developers to build mining software, which is expected to be finalized soon.
This move aligns with Tether's expansion beyond stablecoins into infrastructure and aims to lower entry barriers by removing the proprietary "black box" nature of existing mining setups, similar to efforts by companies like Block.
