Tether launches open-source Bitcoin mining OS to challenge proprietary software
Summary
Tether has launched MiningOS (MOS), an open-source operating system designed to manage, monitor, and automate Bitcoin mining across various scales, from home setups to large industrial sites. This move aims to challenge proprietary, vendor-controlled software by offering miners an alternative built on a modular, peer-to-peer architecture that avoids reliance on centralized services. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that MOS makes Bitcoin mining infrastructure more open and accessible, allowing operators to manage hardware and energy usage without being locked into third-party platforms. Released under an Apache 2.0 license, MOS is hardware-agnostic, and Tether also announced a complementary Mining SDK for community development. This initiative is part of Tether's broader strategy to expand beyond its core USDT stablecoin business into crypto infrastructure, following recent expansions into tokenized commodities and a US-focused stablecoin.
