Tether has integrated its stablecoin USDT and its gold-backed asset Tether Gold (XAUt0) into Opera's MiniPay wallet, aiming to provide millions in emerging markets with access to stable, dollar- and gold-backed value without blockchain complexity. MiniPay, built on the Celo blockchain, focuses on fast, affordable digital payments and has expanded across over 60 countries, starting in Africa. Since its late 2023 launch, the wallet has achieved 3.6 million on-chain users and facilitated 350 million transactions. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated the integration helps create genuinely useful digital asset tools, while Opera's EVP Mobile, Jørgen Arnesen, noted it turns smartphone reach into real financial access for users holding, sending, and saving in digital dollars.
