Quantum threat gets real: Ethereum Foundation prioritizes security with leanVM and PQ signatures

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has elevated post-quantum (PQ) security to a strategic priority, forming a dedicated PQ team in early 2026 due to the rapid shift of quantum computing from theory to engineering reality. Thomas Coratger, who leads the new team, emphasized the need to prepare before quantum computers can break current cryptography. The primary engineering challenge involves replacing Ethereum’s current signature system while maintaining scalability. To address this, the EF is developing leanVM, specialized software designed to bundle many PQ approvals into a single proof to avoid overwhelming the blockchain. The foundation is already testing networks with PQ signatures, stressing that while there is no immediate danger, proactive measures are necessary given the slow pace of decentralized network upgrades versus rapid scientific advancement. This effort is part of a broader industry trend, with players like Coinbase and Optimism also developing quantum-era security roadmaps.
