Trump threatens 100% tariff on Canadian goods over China deal

President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that he would immediately impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the U.S. if Canada proceeds with a trade agreement with China. Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of trying to turn Canada into a "drop off port" for Chinese goods, warning that China would ultimately destroy Canada's economy and way of life.

The threat comes as Canada and China announced a trade agreement on January 16 that includes significant tariff reductions, such as lowering the surtax on Chinese electric vehicles and reducing tariffs on Canadian canola seeds. This move by Carney to deepen ties with Beijing contrasts with his warnings about threats to the global, rules-based order from the U.S. under Trump.

However, Canada's heavy reliance on the U.S. economy, which receives over 75% of its exports, presents a major obstacle to pivoting toward China, leading analysts to suggest Carney may ultimately return to close cooperation with the U.S.
