Kingsport City leaders advance Bitcoin mining and data center regulation

The Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen has moved forward with an ordinance establishing zoning regulations for cryptocurrency mining operations and data centers. Passed on its first reading, the ordinance mandates strict standards, including specific setbacks, noise limits, and zoning restrictions, permitting crypto mining only in heavy industrial zones, contingent upon special exception approval and continuous sound and vibration studies. City Manager Ken Weems stated the goal is to protect existing property owners. Board members viewed the measure as balanced, noting other communities are reviewing it. This regulatory push follows public scrutiny over noise complaints related to Bitcoin mining facilities in neighboring areas, such as the stalled CleanSpark facility and existing sites in Limestone.
