Ethereum Must Stop Sacrificing Values For Adoption: Buterin

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that the ecosystem must immediately stop sacrificing its core values—decentralization, privacy, and self-sovereignty—in the pursuit of mainstream adoption. He designated 2026 as the year to reclaim lost ground, ceasing compromises made for adoption. To reverse the trend of 'serious backsliding,' Buterin advocates for improved private payments, easier full node operation, decentralized apps not reliant on centralized servers, better control over on-chain data, and improved social recovery wallets. He noted that Dapps have become complex data-leaking behemoths and running nodes has become difficult. Upcoming upgrades like Kohaku and Glamsterdam are expected to address some of these issues. Furthermore, Buterin emphasized that Ethereum needs to pass the 'walkaway test' by becoming cryptographically safe and self-sustainable for decades, requiring quantum resistance and better architecture. He also called for decentralized stablecoins backed by diversified assets to ensure independence from single national currencies.
