DOJ Didn’t Sell Any Bitcoin Forfeited From Samourai case
Summary
Patrick Witt, Executive Director of the White House President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, confirmed via X that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has not liquidated and will not liquidate the digital assets forfeited from the Samourai Wallet case. This forfeited Bitcoin will remain part of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR). This confirmation addressed rumors that surfaced in November after 57.5 BTC moved from a government address to Coinbase Prime, which suggested a violation of President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14233. This order mandates that any Bitcoin obtained through criminal or civil forfeiture "shall not be sold" and must be held in the SBR. The US government currently holds over 328,000 BTC, and Witt stated that building out the SBR remains a priority for the Trump administration, pending agreement between the Treasury and Commerce agencies on legal requirements.
