Vitalik Buterin declares 2026 the year Ethereum reverses ‘backsliding’ of self-sovereignty and trustlessness

Vitalik Buterin announced on X that 2026 is targeted as the year the Ethereum community will begin reversing the "backsliding" in personal autonomy experienced over the last decade. This effort involves boosting onchain privacy, partly through the ongoing Kohaku effort at the Ethereum Foundation, and making it easier for users to run full nodes, use dapps, and control their personal data. Buterin acknowledged this is a long road, but aims to make Ethereum an ecosystem worthy of a greater place in the universe. Key improvements include rolling out social recovery wallets and timelocks to prevent catastrophic loss from misplaced seedphrases, and enhancing privacy through features like private payments from wallets and frameworks like Kohaku. He also stressed the need for dapps to use onchain UIs with IPFS, avoiding reliance on centralized servers that leak data or can be hijacked. Buterin cited centralization in block building and the increasing difficulty of running nodes as examples of past compromises, stating that in 2026, compromises made for mainstream adoption will no longer be accepted.
