Tether freezes $182 million in USDT tied to five Tron addresses
Summary
On January 11, Tether froze more than $182 million worth of USDT distributed across five wallet addresses on the Tron blockchain, with individual freezes ranging from approximately $12 million to $50 million. This action aligns with Tether's voluntary wallet-freezing policy, initiated in December 2023, to comply with directives from the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Specially Designated Nationals list. Tether states it may freeze addresses when ordered or when deemed reasonable and necessary. The stablecoin issuer has blocked over $3 billion in USDT globally to aid law enforcement across 62 jurisdictions. Tether's enforcement activity significantly outpaces competitors; for instance, since 2023, the value of frozen USDT is roughly 30 times greater than the USDC frozen by Circle. USDT remains the dominant stablecoin with over $187 billion in circulation, and stablecoins generally account for 84% of all illicit crypto transaction volume.
