Elon Musk Promises Open Algorithm, But Vitalik Wants Proof Users Can Trust

Elon Musk announced that X (Twitter)'s recommendation algorithm, which controls content distribution, will be open-sourced within seven days, with updates every four weeks. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin supported the move but cautioned that transparency requires verifiability and replicability, suggesting audits of anonymized data to allow users to trace why content might be suppressed. Buterin also noted that the four-week update cycle might be too ambitious for maintaining a fully transparent system. Other community members, like ZachXBT, requested changes to the feed sensitivity, while others proposed simpler, deterministic sorting methods. Buterin has previously advocated for cryptographic proofs (ZK-proofs) and on-chain timestamping to prevent censorship, arguing that open code is only the first step toward restoring user trust and accountability regarding content reach and distribution mechanics.
