Truebit hacker launders $26 million in ETH via Tornado Cash
Summary
The hacker responsible for the Truebit Protocol exploit on January 8 has laundered all 8,535 ETH, valued at about $26 million, using the privacy mixer Tornado Cash. The attack, which is the first major DeFi breach of the year, exploited an integer overflow in a legacy smart contract, allowing the attacker to mint millions of TRU tokens cheaply and drain the protocol's liquidity. This action caused the TRU token price to crash by over 99.9%, destroying investor value. The Truebit team has advised users against interacting with the compromised contract, is coordinating with law enforcement, and is conducting a full protocol review. Security firms have linked the wallet used in this attack to a previous Sparkle Protocol hack.
