Ethereum’s Buterin Calls for ‘Sovereign Web’ Tools to Counter Corporate Control

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, publicly called for the development of digital tools constituting a "sovereign web" to counteract the current internet ecosystem, which he termed "corposlop." He criticized major tech firms for using sleek branding alongside predatory optimization, dopamine-driven algorithms, and mass data collection within "walled gardens" to maximize profit at the expense of user agency and psychological autonomy.

Buterin argued that the modern concept of digital sovereignty must evolve beyond just evading government censorship to include securing independence from corporate homogenization and the "soul-sucking concept of 'the meta.'" He suggested that cryptographic tools are essential to protect individuals from corporate attention harvesting and capital extraction.

To achieve this, Buterin proposed a roadmap focusing on privacy-preserving, local-first applications that reduce reliance on third parties. He also advocated for financial tools that support sustainable wealth accumulation while rejecting high-leverage speculation. Finally, he called for open AI systems that enhance human productivity rather than fostering user passivity.
