Buterin: Ethereum is Linux for the Open Internet of Value

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin likened the Ethereum network to the open-source operating system Linux, noting that both are open source and allow for custom implementations. Buterin explained that while Linux achieves customization through software modifications, Ethereum utilizes its layer-2 (L2) scaling networks for this purpose. He stressed the goal is for Ethereum L1 to serve as the foundational home for finance, identity, social, and governance needs, granting users autonomy without relying on intermediaries. This analogy supports the Ethereum Foundation's vision of Ethereum becoming an operating system for the Internet that facilitates distributed computation and consensus. Despite having 127 L2 networks offering diverse scaling options and user experience benefits, some critics worry this fragmentation could trap liquidity. However, proponents, like Polygon co-founder Anurag Arjun, see the modular roadmap as enabling experimentation with different execution environments and block times.
